IPAD Apple wants, but is it necessary?

Apple announced it sold 300,000 the first day IPAD was available, so the device has been a good start. But as I said before, I think we have to see how people are actually using IPAD after they've had a couple of months before we know whether this is really a game-changer or just a fun gadget.

My IPAD arrived mid-morning on Saturday and, despite a beautiful weekend, I could spend time with it. So far I have had some problems, but overall my experiences have been quite positive.

As usual, with most Apple devices, IPAD pending impressive. After I managed to put in place, I immediately found fighting with my family for the moment the device. The house walls conical metal look thinner and lighter than it really is. The brushed aluminum casing felt a bit slippery but generally well treated IPAD. At 1.5 pounds, is notably heavier than a newspaper, magazine, or Kindle, but I do not think will be a real barrier for people to use.

Setup was simple. IPAD work with iTunes, while as an iPod or iPhone, and select applications, music, videos and photos you want to transfer to iTunes. However, to obtain IPAD at work, you must download and install iTunes 9.1, and for some reason, this version took about 40 minutes to process my iTunes library.

So far, I have primarily used the device to address some of the multimedia applications. I found many applications, such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times U.S. Today, Marvel Comics, ABC and others. Overall, I was very impressed by the creativity of these applications have shown, and we expect to see in the future. (See my view here.) I'm still not convinced that many people will pay for these applications if the same content is freely available on its website, but there is something to say about the fact that now you can take the information with you online.

I found the IPAD usually very easy to read. In normal lighting in the house and outdoor shade, it looked pretty good. Like most LCDs, it does not work in sunlight and I found the screen look a little embarrassing when you try to read application logs on the train. Far I am generally satisfied with the LCD, although I have not really tried to read books during the time period yet. (The book I wanted to read this week is not in electronic format.)

I tried both and Exchange webmail on the device, and the new user interface for the client mail is quite interesting. When the screen is placed horizontally, a list of messages to the left and the effective message (HTML format) on the right. When a hold it upright, a message appears at the moment, but you can press a button to see a drop in all your messages, or a list of all your files.

My Yahoo email account seems to work pretty well offline, but the reality of Exchange messaging need for a connection (as it does on the iPhone). I love the way the IPAD indexes mail messages and contacts with files Senior Researcher screen. In general, I was very happy with the iPhone's mail client. I think it's more than the mail client on the Motorola Droid For example, although the mail client for Mac and Windows have many capabilities.

The Safari web browser works the same in the IPAD, as done in the iPhone, with all the same advantages and disadvantages, except, of course, you can see much more of the page on the big screen. And it a big difference. A laptop is usually at least as big as a screen IPAD, of course, and the support of Flash and Silverlight – and a great thing, at least in this time.

For example, in the mail this weekend, I had several messages with links to YouTube videos or music sites, and simply do not work the IPAD. (One of them was a link to the OK Go "This Too Shall Pass" video Rube Goldberg-type, which has more than 10 million times, but clicking on the IPAD just get a "Can not load the video" box. You find a similar version using the YouTube application, but this is not the same.)

IPAD has almost no battery life of an e-reader, in part because the LCD screen. But it was not bad. I'm about eight hours before you see the battery "low" message which is slightly less than what Apple says and significantly worse than many of the first comments. I believe that a weak wireless signal is based more battery power of a fort.

Sitting on a sofa with IPAD to surf the Web for e-mail has been a pleasant one. The machine is relatively light and it seems catchy. But they lack the characteristics I have in my laptop? Of course.

The absence of a physical keyboard is obvious. The screen keyboard is not bad, it is perfectly possible to meet The e-mail messages, but I do not have such notice on the screen. Tim Gideon of PC Magazine wrote a review that way, but not for me. If we were all on-screen keyboards just a physical keyboard seems a step forward.

Multitasking is another obvious problem. You can play music from iTunes to run other applications, but not Pandora or Rhapsody.

On the other hand, is very easy to take the IPAD and just use it without thinking about starting (assuming charge), and I do not care that I'm missing find the keyboard, multitasking, or anything that Flash often. I'll have to choose this solution a little more and see how many times at last reach the IPAD and how many Sometimes I'm back to my laptop.

I have used other tablets before, and clearly IPAD offers a better consumer experience that what happened before. But I think the jury is still deliberating as to whether moves from being a fun gadget for early adopters of a very useful technology that most people use.
